I like the campfire concept. Varied conversation, most of it related to Death Valley. Sure there's some whackos, but you can still learn from them. Seems like the "true" desert rats are generally a bit off kilter, yes? Most of us on this board are adults, I'm assuming, and remember that lesson from kindergarten about "stick and stones?" If strong words on the internet make you too nervous to participate, then perhaps the problem isn't the words.

But, maybe there is reason to fear participation. I've had others look up my IP and send me threatening messages. I've heard calls that I be investigated, this for expressing opinions contrary to the socially acceptable norms. PAUL: are you still writing down the license plate numbers of people who park in front of your house? I'm glad my comments have had enough impact on you that you still obsess upon them, but really, you should re-read them again.

I'll spare you the rant, but when a ranger screws with me, my only recourse is to write about it, that's it, I'm not advocating overthrow of our government or the destruction of civilization. You'll notice I've also given some pretty good advice. Well, good enough to have kept me out of trouble in the backcountry.

So keep this board open! Free! Like cyberspace and the wild west used to be!
