Red Wall Canyon and 50 Cal. machine gun shells

Hi All,

A while back we hiked up to Red Wall Canyon, as we walked up the 2 miles of aluvail fan to the canyon the kids found .50 cal machine gun shells sprinkled on the ground.
I found a site on the net that showed pics of a B24 that had crashed around Furance Creek during WWII, It had been flying north to south. I wonder If these shells came from this bomber?

Or perhaps were hikers in the Grapevines used for target pratice?
