In the southern DV region, just north of the terminus of Owlshead Mt. road, while walking the NWC fenceline to Epson Salt Mine, I found more spent 50 cal shells then I could count. All in various stages of being buried, and scattered about randomly -- no bunches.
My find was interesting, but certainly not confounding, given the many years of aircraft training & testing at NWC. But Lewis finding them in Red Wall Canyon, well, that's different. My guess is that one bad apple -- in this case maybe one of our flyboys in training -- erred in judgement and fired 'em off for some reason...
