I think there are two points to be made here. Rob says that there were "Nevada Trans" folks making sure that nobody drove past a certain point on the Nevada side. If Nevada had people out there why didn't California? That said, I agree with all of the other points that each individual should be prepared, and take responsibility for their actions. About 5 years ago I was up the Trail Canyon road - at least two miles off the West Side Road - with a tent trailer (don't ask!) - and woke up on a Sunday Morning with a LIGHT rain just starting to fall. I was aware that a storm might be coming in over the weekend. Since we were quite a ways up the alluvial fan, and not near or in the canyon, I felt rather safe, but knowing that we had to go through a few washes to get back to the West Side Road, made an immediate decision to go. I have never seen my family and friends move so fast when I told them my concern. We were gone within 10 minutes of when the "light rain" had started. If it had been a massive downpour I probably would have stayed put on the higher ground. We had plenty of supplies. In any case, I think this is everyones point (and I agree) - Take responsibility for your actions, know what can and might happen, and be prepared for the worst...
