Vegas or LAX?

I've been trying to figure out the best route to get to DV. Have to meet some folks in Furnace Creek March 20 for a photo workshop.
Airline rates to Vegas are higher for me than LAX. Wouldn't mind driving from LAX as there some photo opportunities I would like to hit on the way, but exactly how far is it from LAX? And is it a fairly quick (highway) drive?
