One week in Death Valley - suggestions?

After 7 years in California, I thought it is probably time for me to spend some quality time in Death Valley and would love suggestions for a week's intinerary. I love to backpack, but I imaging mid-October is still quite hot for long walks. I would love to see the towering dunes and possibly stay in a kitschy motel or two along the way. The weirder and eerier, the better. Thanks in advance.
