Kid - You are right; you hit it on the button! David, you should note that the rain was .33 inches at the weather station in Furnace Creek by the Ranger Station. Up FC was, where there is no rain gage, the rain fall could have been much more and it could have covered a fairly large area. Thunderstorms can be very focused or somewhat more wide spread. This one looks like it a number of focused cells within the storm complex. In other words, it is hard to tell the actual fall amount. It will be easier to calculate a rough estimate on peak stream flow using channel width and depth information. For example, I calculated that a flood down Happy Canyon several years ago peaked at about 25,000 cubic feet of water a second (give or take about 10,000.) That is a lot of water - exceeds any flow in the Colorado River most years. I think we will find that the FC Wash had even more at its peak. And, you are right, it doesn't sink in easily; it flows fast.
