I thought famous borax-employee, Harry Gower, dynamited that section to divert the flood waters down that way to help spare the-then borax company owned Furnace Creek Inn from further damage. A flood in the 1930's (not really sure of the time period) took out (permanently) the orginal entry gates to the Inn and a lower terrace of rooms.
