Why Stella's Place?Posted by moraine on June 23, 2004 at 02:54:49: This question should probably be asked by a woman, so I'll ask it: Why does everybody call it Stella's place when Carl Mengel built (or rebuilt) it and lived in it for 30 years? Mengel was a good friend of Pete Aguereberry and Shorty Harris. He downplayed his chronic health problems and prospected a vast area with one good leg. He developed several mines including the Keystone in Goler Wash. At his cabin, he developed the water system and grew a big garden. He built substantial parts of the road over Mengel Pass. In the later part of his life only medical emergencies took him far from Butte Valley. He always came back. All I know about Stella is that she later lived in Mengel's cabin and stayed on after her husband died. She once had a yard sale. Emmett Harder didn't like her much. There must be some interesting and important things that she did, for everyone to rename Carl's house for her.
