I just returned from a vacation to Ca.(more specifically,Death Valley) In researching Death Valley I found out about Barker Ranch (i read helter skelter years ago) I researched the web and downloaded a topo for the journey. From Balerat we went the 15.2 miles and turned left up Goler Wash with our rental Mitsubishi Montero LS (one hell of a good little car)
We went past the junkyard up to where the road took a sharp left (you could see the "entering state forrest" or something like that sign on the left)we turned right.
We followed the road until it split, turned right and followed it till it ended. Turned around and followed the left split until that ended.
We figured the road had been washed out and grown over!
My friend Nora (scout) has had problems and has only one good leg left (and no bug spray) and isn't up to hikeing. We turned around and headed back down Goler Wash, checked out the junkyard, the upside down Jeep, the cabins and attempted to climb the road that went between them and uphill from there. That too looked washed out and the front cv joints on the Mitsu would occasionally emit clattering noises.
At this point we deceided to call it a day (5:00 PM) and head for Ridgecrest for the night while our trusty steed still runs!
We signed the book at Neumans Cabin and left!
We are thinking of heading back there next year to try again with better directions.
Can anyone tell me where we went wrong?
Thanks
