Last month we rented a Ford Escape from Hertz in Vegas. Didn't get the insurance since my credit card includes it. However, you have to pay if you need service and then get reimbursed from your credit card company. It might be simpler to just get the optional insurance. The Escape was good on gas, bad on washboards. It would have been nice to let some air out of the tires but no compressor. The toughest road we were on was the road from Darwin Falls to Darwin. We also climbed around some roads (Hogback) in Alabama Hills. The Escape handled it fine.
The first pic is in Titus Canyon at the beginning of the trip. The second pic is later at the end of the week right before we dropped it off at Hertz ;-)
