Wow, that must be an old map book. The road from Ridgecrest through Trona (Hwy 178) all the way up to Hwy 190 is paved. It is a very beautiful drive and has very decent road conditions. My favorite view is just about 10 miles north of Trona where you descend from the Slate Range and get your first glimpse of the beautiful Panamint Valley with Telescope Peak in the background. I highly recommend this route. I've never timed it, but I figure it would take you about an hour and a half to get from Ridgecrest to Stovepipe. Enjoy your trip
