After you cross the Slate Range and descend into the Panamint Valley, you will shortly see a large plaque and a dirt road heading off to the right, this will take you to the old town of Ballarat. Home to many a famous old prospectors. Also, before you reach Trona, you can visit the Trona Pinnacles, where the New Plant of the Apes movie was filmed.
