Lara, I suggest buying new tires( my suggestion BFG mud terrain radials, thier sidewalls are difficult to puncture) They make these tires in all sizes that trucks come in. Buy a tow strap, at least a 20,000 lb duty rating, hi lift jack, all in case you get stuck. If you want to spend a little more $$$ buy good wheels, like Mickey Thompson. If you travel alone, buy a CB radio with a linear amplifier to boost your signal. Carry a first aid kit in your truck, just in case. Bring at least two gallons of water per day, per person in backcountry travel. Get yourself a fire extinguisher. I have a low gear ratio in my truck, but unless you are a hard-core off roader that's not necessary. This is a list of things to fix your car up for the desert. Also, don't forget the most important backcountry tool- a camera!
