It is my understanding that the Park service has a policy relating to the cabims within the Park of "arrested decay". That is, doing whatever may be needed to keep the cabins from deteriorating any further. That being said, I would assume the work being done on the Geologist cabin may be in violation of the policy. There has never been plywood or drywall on the rafters of that cabin. So, that would be considered an "improvement or addition" which in the past has been strictly forbiden. I am in no way a proponent of the policy, and I am glad to hear that worthwhile improvements are being made to those cabins. Years ago, before the FOB, we frequented the Butte Valley cabins. Especially Russell's. When we attempted to repair the waterheater and gas line, we were met with some serious opposition and provided with the "arrested decay" policy. Perhaps new Park management has changed their position on what is allowed to be done to the cabins within the Park. That would be a "good thing!" The NPS and DV management has supported the BLM's efforts in preserving cabins on the BLM managed public lands through the Adopt-A-Cabin program. However, I don't think that NPS has integrated the same sort of program into thier management plan as of yet. That may be what Joel has been involved in over the past year or so. At any rate, anyone who has the opportunity to make worthwhile improvements as well as arrest any decay to the Butte Valley cabins is okay with me! Tom Worker
