First, I do not work for the Park Service. I am involved with a project/study related to archaeology and involves the University of Chicago, UCR, and UCLA and is being conducted in the Panamint Mountain Range. And at that, being governed by the NPS out of Denver.

With regard to the cabin, I know a few years back the Friends of the Briggs Cabin (FOB) were doing some preventive maintenance (PM) with the cabins, but stopped after receiving some slack from some people. Not sure who the person from Riverside is, but glad someone is doing PM.

I know for a fact, the NPS out of New Mexico is in the process of documenting all the cabins in DV. I was approached by them last year with regard to the Whippoorwill Flats area and assisted them with some documentation and "show and tell" type stuff. I would like to go on tell you more, but they were very quiet about this and the purpose of their investigation/study.

Information about cabin status being discussed by NPS folks - I was fortunate to meet a couple of rangers from DV this past year with the FOB's members at Ballarat. We got on the discussion about cabins and such. They try not to prove this information because of the ruggedness of the area and the lack of manpower for patrolling. In away, I must agree with them. I cant tell you how many times I have had to tow or pull out "city folks" because they wanted to see something, way off the road. DV is still a rugged place and as you are aware, it took several lives last year.

Just glad to hear someone is maintaining them and this is my three cents.
