Sometimes you can successfully travel the Racetrack Road in a 2WD vehicle -- it depends on the weather and DVNP road maint schedule.

August sometimes brings summer monsoon rains to the region precluding 2WD access to the Racetrack. However, the Road can be in excellent shape immediately following the efforts of occasional road graters.

Honestly, you won't know for sure until you arrive. Regardless, a high clearance vehicle is probably more important than 4WD.

I recommend that you check the DVNP Morning Report upon your arrival, available from the homepage of DeathValley.com, and posted at all restaurants and lodges in the Park. Feel free to check conditions with another posting just before you depart for your visit...
