With high clearance 2WD and no prior bad weather to mess things up, you'll likely be successful in reaching the top of Hunter Mtn from the South.
However, decending to Hidden Valley & Racetrack (or ascending Hunter Mtn from the North) there are some steep switchbacks and wet spots that might give you trouble if you had to drive back up for some reason (ie. washout, heat sickness, etc).
Regardless, you are wise in considering the DV high country during your August visit -- that'll keep the temps down considerably.
