After the Furnace Creek Camp, I would head up the highway, past Stovepipe Wells, into the Cottonwood Mountains and Lower Marble Canyon. It is isolated and prone to flash flooding, but not difficult to reach. Digonett describes the many backpacking options well in the "Lower Marble Canyon" chapter of his book. There are good fire rings from old camps along the way, both on the lower and upper routes. I have done both in the past year.
