I hear that those crews actually drove in and out every day, staying in Bishop or Big Pine? That must have added to the cost as well!
I think the painted rock is a big loss - I've seen people have to camp out on the Saline Valley road because they can't find the turnoff (especially at night) and have to wait for another vehicle to come along that they can follow in.
