The Borax Company developed tourism because after building Ryan, Death Valley Jct. and a 1,000,000 RR (the T&T) to settle down to mine their vast colemanite deposits, they discovered BORON. So they had all this infrastructure just built for a long haul in DV, with suddenly no use (or way to pay) for it. So, tourism was explored as a way to develop traffic on the RR and DVJ and Ryan were converted to hotels. Then the Inn was built, etc.

To their credit, they did things pretty first class - probably due to many of the execs. connection (and deep love) for the valley.

Doubt if any of them have it now that it is part of the big world wide mining conglomerate.

Was it better - we'll there were less people so less conflicts and potential impacts back then.
