Also, many desert storms are composed of "cells" that only affect a limited area, on a regional basis. That is, it may rain like a deluge in one or a couple of adjacent drainages, but a few miles away it's barely wet. Those are the types of things the modern weather radars are picking up.

Here in the central San Joaquin Valley (Fresno area) several radio & TV stations broadcast severe weather advisories that are pretty accurate.

As the forecast & emergency notification technology improves, I'm sure the Feds will get talked into paying for broadcasting such emergency warnings. Just hope you're not listening to CDs, or just tooling along with the top off enjoying the weather.
