I love Death Valley, and I enjoy being in the backcountry of Death Valley National Park as much as anyone. However, what I am hearing about the restrictions where even the locals are not allowed to walk out into the desert does jive with a feeling I get out there sometimes...with all the rules and regulations, sometimes I breath a little sigh of relief when I cross over the "border" onto BLM land. Sometimes I spend more time over in Panamint. My last trip out there I travelled along the southern border and camped over on BLM land...
I can understand the Park Service not wanting anyone to get hurt, but this business of keeping people away from the wash a week after the flood? There are old rusting cars all over Death Valley...are they afraid someone is going to cut themselves on the NEW ones? What is out there the Park Service doesn't want the public to see?
It sounds like a police state out there...
