They were in the wrong spot at the wrong time. It was just the way the Fates threw the dice. Chances are they didn't even know what was going to hit them until did. That's the way Flash Flood's work. Kind of like Hurracane Charley. Was supposed to hit Tampa area, instead it went north and hit a completely different area.
