Great article -- I’ve always questioned global warming, it seems almost as far fetched as the silly “Evolution” thing, or even better yet, “The world is round and is not the center of the universe” idea (what nimrod came up with that one?).

Seriously, finding high temps is about more than proving or disproving global warming -- it’s also about the extremes of life. Some think that temps in some parts of the park can be as much as ten degrees hotter than Furnace Creek. There are complex organisms there, that live in the heat, they are multi-cellular, have specialized tissue and sexual reproduction. I'm talking about things like lizards and higher plants, far more complex than algea in a hot spring. Every degree of hotter temps that they survive is one more chance that life can exist somewhere else....

If nothing else, understanding extremes give us some greater idea of the extent of creation. A Jesuit astronomer on Mt. Graham once told me that by learning about the creation, he hoped to learn about the creator.
