>>I was raised between Apple Valley and Lucerne Valley, 1954-1974. Small towns then. Phelan was only a junction gas station and Rockin' K bar, a motorcyle hangout. Lots of empty space in towns and between towns. Now nearly a million people there. Glad I left in '74 and went north to the eastern Sierra Nevada and Owens Valley and have stayed since.<< --------------------------- Well, I was a kid in Apple Valley 1956-1959, rode the bus to grade school in Victorville. Nearest house to us was a half mile away. Went back to try to find our old place last year and freaked out at what it's become. God save us from Wal-Mart. Living now in the mountains of Kern Co. -- when we want to get away for a few days we shack up in Lone Pine, explore back roads & rock art sites & buzz down to Panamint Springs for lunch. Last two-week vacation we took was to Wyoming via county roads (no interstates, puh-leeze) for more of the same. Screw Las Vegas, entertainment is Mazourka Pass when you misread the weather and wind up caught in a thunderstorm. "But Honey, Roger Mitchell said it was only a Class II!" BTW Dave I know this is 'way old news but what in hell happened at Little Lake? Argh. We enjoy your GBR site.
