I've used the .22 shot a few times, the most memorable was on a gopher burrowing in my garden. I stalked that bugger and nailed him at close range with a rifle using the shot shells.
But for snakes, I'd suggest something in the .38 or larger caliber shot shells. And of course be legal about it. And careful. Don't want to have to limp out for surgery from the outback.
