Yea, I have the same question. I am heading towards 50 years old and find that I am getting more concerned/cautious in my years. I did buy a pistol and I am not a gun person...target practiced when I was younger. I noted that at about 5' (5' from pistol to ground, so about 3' from my leg) the spread of the bird shot had a diamater of about 6". At 10' it was about 12".
So far I have not shot myself.
