Good compromise between simplicy and modern motors is a old solid front axle fuel injected
fourrunner or toyota pickup. We use to abuse
the crap out of these and they always got them
back and the fuel injection was much better on
gas and fuel/air mixture due to altitude changes
than the earlier carb versions. Lots of torque
for a 2.3 litre. Avoid the 3.0V6 versions unless
you know for sure the head gaskets have been replaced. I have also had great luck with Nissan
hardbody pickups or pathfinders with the 3.0 V6.
Only problems with the Nissans is a weak steering
gear that requires replacement parts after 50K miles or so.
