Death Valley travelers use caution this weekend thru Wednesday as 175 runners will be staggering between Badwater and Mt. Whitney.
The race starts early monday at the Badwater salt pond. It ends at the Whitney portal, with a select few(with permits) who will continue to the summit without rest.
There are currently two runners from Europe who are doing this event round trip. They started at 0545 today at the Whitney summit. They will run non stop, arriving at Badwater by 0545 monday, and they will then turn and run 135 miles back to the summit.A runner from West Germany did this same feat 2 years ago,and he only stoped for 5 minutes to have a beer with Panamint Jerry. Jerry opens up the resort for the runners and crew members and without him this insane event would not be possible.I have to pace my runner from panamint to Lone pine and without jerrys thick as tar coffee I couldnt make it!
Runners will be going against traffic and wearing reflective clothing at night, and most of them will wear white long sleeve clothing during the heat of the day.
Use caution when passing or watch for crew members crossing the roads. After 40-50 hours of running in 120 degree heat, the mind and body get exhausted.Give them a honk and wave, and cheer if you see Pam Reed, the worlds best ultra runner.
