If you are uncomfortable with the military, consider the Peace Corps. Returned Peace Corps Volunteers get a year or more or hiring preference that is similar to veterans preference -- it worked for me.
Even with PC or military service, you might still need to work seasonally or as a volunteer to get on the the Park Service in a geology related position. I worked four seasonal jobs, two before, and two after two years as a Park Ranger in the Peace Corps before managing to swing a permenant resource job with the NPS.
