There are many places just outside of the park to rockhound legal, and with much better success. Tecopa(talc, opal, amythest crystal, chalcedony roses)Beatty(flourides, fossils, marble), Trona(salt crystals, opal, chalcedony, agate) are just a few, get a copy of a good gude book, and get out there and enjoy!
Take your camera, the best pics I ever took were while I was out rockhounding, I guess it puts you in tune with the outdoors.
