What do you consider rockhounding? Pick and shovel? If you ask the park service, you are not allowed to scratch your backside or bark at the moon unless you have proper permits and pay the fees. You are not allowed to remove any rock. If you want to take your kids to the desert to pick rocks, by god, do it! They will have a great time. The park is so understaffed that you will not see a ranger unless you stop at the fee station. I choose to smoke by that place. Also, if you really want to dig a big hole , play funny games with BIG rocks, and not be bothered, consider the Mojave desert within BLM boundaries. Stop by the Jawbone center and speak with Robin the turtle lady. She is a sweetheart and will provide free maps and information. Jawbone center is 20 miles north of mojave on hwy 14,a quarter mile north of a billboard with Boxcars girlfriend. Take plenty of water and prepare for temps of 105.
