Most GPSes can calculate the distance between two waypoints, or current position and a waypoint. But I'd be surprised if they didn't use some kind of "great circle" calculation to determine the shortest surface distance between two points. If that's the case, you'd get 1/2 of the circumferance of the earth. Of course with that, calculating the diameter is easy!
