Some 25+ years ago during the time Richards was the Death Valley National Monument Park Sup. MANY mining claims were closed or resolved as no longer claims, this was an effort to eliminate any privet holdings inside the "soon to be DVNP"
Unknown to the public and after all court ruling were finalized, these sites were erased from the face of the earth, some blown up, some dozed.
A great deal of debate went on between the BLM and the NPS, the issue was that once the area became "wilderness" or "Park as it may be" that all resources would be locked up for ever and if the need for, lets say, some rare metal used in making cheeper car parts, was ever needed, sorry
