Thanks Kathleen, I did have a telephoto on, but still we were close as most of these shots have very little cropping. He was very sluggish, like most Southern Pacific rattlesnakes. I sat down in front of him for quite a while - probably 5 feet away at most. Never once did he tongue flick or rattle. My friend Susan finally convinced him to move from under the bush and he just sorta ambled away. Still no rattle and only a couple of tongue-flicks. He obviously didn't feel threatened.

Susan, on the other hand, was a little spooked because she didn't see him until she turned around to come back. We were so very careful checking under all the bushes and such, but looking behind as she went by a bush wasn't thought of. She stepped next to him about 2-3 inches away and then saw him under this tiny bush when she turned.

Now we look around even better!
