They guy at Ballarat is Rocky Novak. As for where you went wrong....at Lee Flat, it sounds like you turned/kept right and went over Hunter Mountain, instead of keeping left and decending into Saline. At Teakettle you needed to turn left and head to the bottom of the Racetrack. Turning right at the end of the Racetrack Rd will bring you to the top of Lippencott.

The pic is of the Saline/Hunter Mountain intersection. Saline and the bottom end of Lippencott is down the left fork.
