In 1973 you could not get up Surprise without a winch (I didn't have one.) The following year someone had done considerable work on the road with a Bobcat or similar loader and you could drive all the way up without even needing 4WD. At Panamint were a "group" of people who were followers of Charlie as evidenced by their conduct as taught by Charlie. It is my understanding that a year or two later, one of them may have killed another and there was considerable police investigation at that time. The road was subsequently washed out.
