Story I found a few years backPosted by wingman1 on May 03, 2004 at 10:46:17: There used to be a paper circulated out in the East Mojave called "End of the Line". Mainly dedicated to rail road stuff. Whenever I was at Goffs, I pick one up. I haven't seen one in quite awhile, so I'm pretty sure they are no longer being printed. Anyway, I was going through some old papers this weekend and came across one I'd saved. The following is a story printed around 2000. It still makes me laugh. Story: For those who have never traveled to the great West, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings on roadways to prevent cattle from crossing. For some reason the Bovines will not step on the guards, probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails. I need to make that clear in order for everyone to appreciate the following true story. President Clinton heard there were over 1,000,000 cattle guards in Colorado. Because Colorado ranchers protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, he ordered Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt to FIRE half of all the “guards” immediately. Before Babbitt could respond, and presumably straighten him out, Colorado’s congresswomen Pat Schroder (D) intervened with a request that before any guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining. I have no idea if this is true, but for some reason I’m pretty sure it is.
