I recently rented a Jeep Cherokee from Thrifty in Las Vegas. The four wheel drive was not de-activated (frankly do not see a major rental company doing that these days). It did have "street" Goodyear Wrangler ST tires on it. We were able to relatively comfortably sleep in the back. We made it through the Racetrack, Lippencott Rd, Goler Wash and Mengal Pass with no problem. The trick is to not overload the vehicle and tires, and not drive like a complete maniac.
