Posted by Dezdan on March 26, 2005 at 14:21:25: Trail Report for: Trail Canyon
The road up Trail Canyon was easy going and only slightly rocky for the first 2 miles. Once the road drops into the wash, any signs of the original road are gone - washed away by the series of floods Death Valley experienced! High clearance 4wd vehicles only after this point! A primitive road exist, winding its way up the wash, mostly in very lose to very rocky gravel. There seems to be a few variations of the primitive road, making it very hard to follow as it zigzags up the left (south) side of the wash. The further up the wash one travels, the fainter the primitive road becomes and one can easily become lost, having to get out and hunt for the road on foot. It is unknown to me if the primitive road exist further up the canyon beyond 36°18'46" N, 116°58'56" W. I would recommend traveling this road in the early morning hours when the sun is low in the sky as it is easier to follow the road this way. People need to start making their way up the canyon to wear in this new road before the Park Service decides to close the canyon to vehicle travel due to lack of a road!
