Posted by Dezdan on January 06, 2004 at 12:23:06: Trail Report for: Harry Wade Road
Traveling Harry Wade Road from Hwy 127 our party found the route to be in excellent condition. The road was recently graded up until the Amargosa River crossing and the grader was still parked at the head of the route near Hwy 127. No soft sand or menacing washboard was found on this lower section of the route and can be deemed fully passable with a 2wd vehicle. At the Amargosa River crossing water was standing roughly a foot high and was a breeze to cross in a high clearance 2wd vehicle. Passenger cars and low clearance 2wd SUV's should proceed with caution, though I see no immediate threat. Once across the Amargosa River it was evident where the grader had stopped and the drive towards Ashford Junction was rather washboarded and bumpy. There were a few spots where recent rains had created a small channel across the road including a ratter nasty one near 'The Narrows' that could catch someone off guard and reek some minor havoc. Due to those small channels I would suggest this section of Harry Wade Road be traveled with a High Clearance vehicle, though I have no doubt that a standard passenger car could travel the route if they proceeded with extreme caution.
