Trail Report for: Saline Valley

The Saline Valley road is one of the most remote roads in California. Ensuring that your vehicle is in good condition and that you are equipped for an extended stay in the desert is extremely important when traversing this desert highway.

We traveled the Saline Valley road in October and November 2002. The Inyo County road crews have done an excellent job re-grading the road - it is fully rehabilitated from the flood damage and washouts of 2001. Though not a recommended mode of travel, it is passable by low clearance two wheel drive vehicles AT THE MOMENT. (We saw a Camaro at the Springs).

Bear in mind that as winter approaches, the condition of the passes can change dramatically and quickly. Carry chains and be prepared to 'hole up' in the valley until the weather clears if snow is likely on the passes.
