Trail Report - 3/4/2002

Trail Report for: Lippencott Road

I had been reading about the infamous Lippencott Mine Road for quite a while.
I finally had a chance to try it when a friend and I visited the Racetrack
early in March. The park service bladed this road a couple of years ago,
and it's not the challenge it apparently once was. But it is narrow and
slow going. At times, the road clings to the edge of some rather steep
mountainsides, but the roadway was in pretty good shape. I was glad that
we never met any oncoming vehicles, because there are not many good places
to pass. I would recommend the downhill direction. Going uphill (especially
on a hot day) would be a long, slow climb.
