I wasn't trying to rile anyone. I was out in extreme southern DV last month for a couple days in 120 heat, but I come prepared...(over 10 gallons of water on board and extensive knowledge of springs, etc.) 120 degree heat in New York City and folks drop like flies...120 in Death Valley and I call it a good time..
I have followed roads in Panamint Valley that collapsed underneath me and dropped my Jeep on it's frame...both were designated open trails. High-Lift Jack and some winching, and rolling again...
High center on rocks? No problem. I live in New Mexico now and the mud here is some of the slimiest stuff I have seen...I winch out with regularity. 12,000 foot passes in Colorado? 3 feet of snow in June? High-Lift and Winch again..
My point is that when I am out there, It is myself against the elements. I am self-contained..food, water, supplies...and knowledge. I expect to get stuck, (but don't relish the idea.) Maps, GPS linked to laptop computer, with TOPO! and DeLorme map software. I toodle around the back country and often see no one but myself and those who may be traveling with me. Sometimes for a week or more.
(And NO ICE!!)
I would never encourage people to travel out there unprepared under any circumstances...And I would not run any roadblocks. I just feel that the idea of the wilderness being closed is ridiculous, and no one should save me from myself. It is a big desert, and I don't take it lightly. But I do plan for worst case scenarios...just check out all the nooks and crannies in my jeep...I could pull MRE's and Fortified MRE snack breads from almost any corner..
It's all part of the challenge to me...
