You can buy bird-shot in many calibers. I tried some once for a Ruger .22 magnum pistol. The stuff worked like crap! I fired about 6-7 shots and couldn't break a beer bottle unless I was right on top of it. I don't want to be that close to a target or a snake. I ended up throwing the rest of the ammo away.

Seriuosly, Unless you're dumb enough to stick your hand in a hole or under a rock, or anywhere without looking you may get bit. Snakes don't move quick and will rattle when you're too close. Pretty simple to avoid them.
If you have to shoot them make sure you separate the head from the body and don't get near it afterwards. Unless you're gonna BBQ it! Scooter's got great recepies for desert dining!
