this is an area of great geologic activity. As I understand it, every couple of years there is a shift in the tetonic plates that created the mountains that surround this area, and the whole playa tilts a few degrees during the movement. If the shift occurs when the surface is wet, the rocks simply drift downhill. When the shift is over, the playa levels out and the only evidence is the movement of the rocks.

Or so I've been told.....
