Dude It is 90KM from the north and 120KM from the
south of rough rock filled road. The problems move all over the place depending on washouts from sudden storms in the mountains. Sharp rocks
can turn up in the road overnight from someone
driving over the road and spining a tire exposing a sharp rock. If the winds come up hard
sand can cover the road and rocks overnight. This is a very harsh place. I can't count the number of flat tires our group has had over the
last 15 years. I run 8ply tires on a little Nissan pickup if that gives you any idea. So you
can think people are being unfriendly but all of
us have saved numerous Newbies or desert virgins if you prefer from themselves. This place has no
guardrails, no curve ahead signs. In some places
if you go off the road on the south you will go
all the way down to the bottom of Panamint valley. You talk about turning around heck some
of the trails in DV have no room to turn around.
If you come in from the south you will climb to
5500ft (1200M). What if it snows? You got chains?
Well you should. Describe all the hazards of this
area would take pages. Nobody is going to write
you a guide to Saline valley road. It would be a
book.
