I think you should chose the entry and exit routes that bring you across the most scenic parts, not necessarily the quickest road... Look at the park map (available on nps.gov in PDF format), look at pictures of the various spots that sound interesting, and then plan your routes based on that... I think Death Valley is not necessarily about one particular spot (Furnace Creek, main valley), but all the various places that can be found next to the road, or off the road, either just by a few footsteps a strenuous hike up a 10000 feet mountain or a night spent alone at the foot of a sand dune in a 20 mile long valley that seems almost untouched by civilisation - in that light, try to enjoy the drive as much as you enjoy the final place you're staying at, or visiting from there, and make as many detours as daylight affords you!
