Zardoz is right --It's a good long drive -- quite a bit more than 15 miles (closer to 40 or 50), and pretty rough. Think real carefully before you do this.

Most of the time, a two wheel drive high clearance will do (I have even seen Subaru station wagons, and once, a Chevy Camaro out there), but it's not a sure thing at all, and it sounds like the road is worse than normal. The road can also be hard on tires, bring along a full sized spare -- if you need to actually use the spare, it's time to bag the trip and turn around, unless you have more than one spare.

If you're not sure what you are doing, you might want to think twice -- it is really the middle of nowhere out there, although I really like it there. If you do get stuck, stay with the vehicle until someone happens by to give you a ride (On the south pass road this time of year, you can expect three or four cars a day, maybe more, but you could end up waiting a day or two instead, either way, you can't walk out unless you are truly prepared and hardcore).

Carry lots of food and water. Cell phones usually don't work there. Let people know where you are going and when you expect to return. Bring extra oil and transmission fluid. Just generally, be prepared for problems.

If you do get out there -- have fun - it is a beautiful place.
